Gear, Jewels, and Flasks Breakdown

Introduction

Storm Brand Storm Brand released in Patch 3.5 Betrayal, and has already become one of the most popular and all-round powerful in the game, as well as one of the best skills for leveling and league-starting. While Storm Brand received a few nerfs in Patch 3.7 Legion League, which hurt the clear and damage of the build throughout the early game, it remained a relatively strong skill overall and a competitive all-rounder. Shifting the build to a more Critical Strike based version gives more punch and feels a little smoother once you hit the proper end-game gearing phase. In Patch 3.10 Delirium League Storm Brand Storm Brand is still an A-tier build as an all-in-one character that can function on any level of budget.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ High clear speed and mobility
+ Capable of dealing with all major bosses (Uber Elder, Aul the Crystal King, Shaper)
+ Very safe when played correctly
+ Excellent at league starting and leveling with plenty of investments to make throughout the league
+ Accessible for all levels of players
+ Excellent “all-rounder”; great for Exiles that want one character to work on

Cons

Deep delving is difficult after a certain point (~450 depth)
Relies on Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap to bolster single target damage
Single target damage is not as strong as top-tier bossing builds

Playstyle

Storm Brand Storm Brand is a ranged skill that attaches to a target for its duration, pulsing periodically and dealing damage in a small area of effect. If the target dies Storm Brand Storm Brand will automatically leap to a nearby target and immediately trigger, and with the right passive skill tree you can have several brands active simultaneously. Using Brand Recall Brand Recall also allows you to reposition your brands to a new area or monster pack and have them instantly trigger. The result is a build that has a high-tempo feel through managing Brand Recall Brand Recall, mobility skills, and creating new Storm Brand Storm Brands — all the damage, however, is automated as your Storm Brand Storm Brands leap from target to target, tearing packs apart in a flash.

There are a few advantages that are unique to brands versus other types of skills. For example, during early gearing progression, tougher opponents can be easily dealt with by attaching your brands before retreating to a safe distance. This style of guerrilla play is especially beneficial versus the Immortal Syndicate, some of which can be quite lethal to a mid-geared Exile first approaching Elder maps.

General mapping gameplay matches the style of other fast-clearing spells, with much of the focus being on the correct utilization of movement skills. Storm Brand Storm Brand itself will typically deal with all standard packs, including Rare enemies, in only a single cast. This allows for a greater focus on speed and positioning, which allows for superlative efficiency in clear and a really entertaining and “zippy” playstyle.

Most of your clearing is done by activating several Storm Brand Storm Brands, then using Shield Charge Shield Charge to enter packs and proc Fortify Support Fortify Support. After charging into a pack, immediately hit Brand Recall Brand Recall to bring all your damage to bear. You will generally be hitting your Brand Recall Brand Recall nearly on cooldown, hence when Empower Support Empower Support is used to further lower the recharge period. Storm Brand Storm Brand is only really used to “maintain” your brands, so that they are active, but is not used as the primary clearing button itself.

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

We recommend starting with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse, which works well with Lifesprig Lifesprig if you have one. Once you are Level 12, and enter the Cavern of Wrath, pick up Storm Brand Storm Brand from Nessa and start using it as your main clearing skill.

In order of priority, the Storm Brand links are:

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  3. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support

Once you talent out of Elemental Overload in the latter half of the leveling process (around the time you do Cruel Lab and invest into Critical Strike on your tree), you will want to adapt your links to the recommended ones in the main portion of the guide.

If you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa, simply fill in the other gem sockets with whatever supports are available from the vendors until you reach Act II and Act III for the other gems.

Link Brand Recall Brand Recall to Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support (Level 3) and Flame Dash Flame Dash. This is a great leveling link and should be acquired as soon as possible.

At Level 12 you can also acquire Blade Vortex Blade Vortex. Link it to Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support, Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support, and Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support as soon as possible.

Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder, and Clarity Clarity should be used as early as possible.

Once you reach Level 28, be sure to get Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap from Maramoa after dealing with General Gravicius. This will greatly bolster your single target damage and make Normal Lab a complete pushover. This should replace your Blade Vortex Blade Vortex link:

  1. Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap
  2. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  3. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  4. Trap and Mine Damage Support Trap and Mine Damage Support

Leveling Tree

Level 34 Tree/54 Points

Level 60 Tree/83 Points

Level 83 Tree/106 Points

FAQ

What Annointment Should I Use for my Amulet?

  • Heart of Thunder is simply the best choice, offering great damage due to the penetration, as well as some Energy Shield leech.

Can I Level with Storm Brand?

Yes, absolutely. Storm Brand Storm Brand feels quite comfortable while leveling, even if it is not the absolute best leveling skill out there. As long as you have a second link for Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap, you should have little trouble with any bosses all the way until mapping.

How Should I Play in Maps?

Create a few Storm Brand Storm Brands, then Shield Charge Shield Charge around the map, slamming Brand Recall Brand Recall as often as possible. Ensure you have good flask uptime, and you should feel quite tanky with the Fortify Support Fortify Support buff active, even in minimal gear.

How Much Unreserved Mana Do I Need?

All Mind over Matter builds aim to have _ Maximum Life*0.4285_ as their ideal Unreserved Mana value. Until this value is achieved, any Mana gained from the Passive Skill tree is as valuable as Life, hence the popular term effective Life. The value of 0.4285 comes from Mind Over Matter itself — 30% of Damage is taken from Mana before Life, and “30/70” = 0.4285, the ratio you should aim for.

How is This Build in Delves?

This build delves quite comfortably, although the maximum depth is quite variable based on gear. So far, the deepest we have experienced is around depth 600.

Hi. I have just started using your build for my freshly created second char in Synthesis. There is one thing I really don’t get: how does Elemental Focus fit into an ailment based build like this!?

Lightning Spire Trap Lightning Spire Trap does a lot of the heavy lifting on bosses and it isn’t a major issue for clearing — Concentrated Effect Support Concentrated Effect Support, Efficacy Support Efficacy Support and Increased Critical Strikes Support Increased Critical Strikes Support are all great alternatives to Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support, and all three can supplant Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support and Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support as well, with the right gear setup.

I’m a bit confused by this part of your guide -

“You will want to invest into Acrobatics fairly early on, as it greatly eases the leveling process and removes much of the potential of troublesome stun-chains.”

Your skill trees in the guide don’t go anywhere near Acrobatics, is this a mistake or is it something to start out with and forget with passive refunds?

Is it possible to combo with Armageddon brand with this build at all?

Just a mistake — in previous versions of the guide we did use Phase Acrobatics but I guess that reference to it slipped through the update process. I’ll fix it right away!

in section 7.2.1 it says “Sine we are not a Critical Strike based build, Dagger implicits are not as valuable to us as they potentially could be.” which i assume slipped past while updating the build ^^

    I have some questions:

Firstly, you have controlled destruction even though this is a crit build, what should I replace it with? Crit multi?

Also, you can use shield charge with a wand now, are wands superior or should I get a sceptre?

Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support works fine in plenty of crit builds, but if you’re dead set on swapping it out there are plenty of options. It’s my top recommendation but Increased Critical Damage Support Increased Critical Damage Support is fine. I’d use Rapiers as suggested but any weapon is workable.

Hey, I don’t understand why Flame Dash is recommended to be in the “Cast when Damage Taken Support” link. Wouldn’t it make more sense to put Flame Dash into a 4 Link with Arcane Surge, thereby leaving the other one as a 3 Link?

As noted in the gem section, Flame Dash Flame Dash is merely included to bolster mobility due to the limitations of Shield Charge Shield Charge, and my recommendation is to use a Vaal skill if you don’t want to use it. We already have Brand Recall Brand Recall to trigger Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support, which is being cast on cooldown. You could swap around those links if you really want to continue to include Flame Dash Flame Dash but it likely won’t result in any change in uptime.

Ok Thanks, i guess i don’t need to level “Cast when Damage Taken Support” as there’s no damage spell linked to it (It currently supports My Flame Dash which is obviously super bad).
Any suggestions on what kind of Vaal skill to look for?

Cast when Damage Taken Support Cast when Damage Taken Support isn’t meant to support Flame Dash Flame Dash, as you suggest. Many builds simply use their CWDT as a means of incorporating additional gems, and since our suggested CWDT is far too low to trigger Flame Dash Flame Dash it simply functions as an independent gem. The “link” in this case is superfluous, we just call it a 4-link because most players opt to link all of their items by default unless it is specifically detrimental.

Just some things I tweaked for personal preferences and better boss kill damage was dropping a point into Elemental Overload, also grabbed Malachai’s Artifice unique ring and put my golem in it if you do this you’re gonna need to jack up the other resists as it gives -20 resistances but gives up to +100 of whatever your golem socket color is also dropped controlled destruction for concentrated effect, this may not be the solution for everyone but if you got a tiny bit of currency to toss out to try it then it might be worth a shot if you’re struggling with boss dps

Edit: Also remember when using someone elses guide and making a character remember that you may have to find specific tweaks for yourself you don’t have to follow the guide exactly its just a reference on what a build should look like and especially using rares you may find yourself missing something vital the build creator had.

All of my builds are originally made for the PC version, so any comments on budget friendliness etc. are based off the typical economy there. I’ve heard some pretty crazy things about the prices of certain items on console relative to their PC counterparts!
