Guide Format

This build guide is split over multiple pages, both to prevent it from getting too long, as well as to help you better find the information you are looking for. In addition to the current page, which presents general information about the build and also contains a Leveling and FAQ section, we have the following pages:

Passive Skill Tree and Gem Links

Ascendancy, Bandits, and Pantheon Powers

Gear, Jewels, and Flasks Breakdown

Introduction

Soulrend Soulrend was released only a few leagues ago, but has since cemented itself as one of the staple builds for players interested in playing around Chaos damage or damage over time. A strong all-rounder that can deal with practically any content without issues, Soulrend Soulrend feels relaxing to play and does not take a deep wallet to get off the ground. In Patch 3.7.0 Legion, Soulrend received some slight nerfs, although some of them were indirect, such as hits to the Trickster Ascendancy itself. Since then, the build has not changed much at all in Patch 3.10 Delirium League in effectiveness and power, and remains a top tier league starter that can approach any content comfortably.

This build is a quick mapper featuring strong defenses, with a safe playstyle that excels in any environment. The main idea behind this build is survival and comfort while maintaining a really high rate of experience per hour and safely pushing towards Level 100, all on a relatively cheap budget with lots of room to expand. Fortunately, this also makes it an excellent and formidable league starter, and a perfect choice for any new league.

Build Assessment

Pros

+ Viable in any league (SSF, Hardcore, Softcore)
+ Fast mapper
+ Chaos damage (Reflect Immunity)
+ 9000+ Effective health pool
+ Well rounded defenses (Mind over Matter, 5.5k+ Life, Trickster, 78% Maximum Resistances)
+ Amazing league starter
+ Great late-game potential

Cons

Will not be able to Delve past ~500
Single target damage does not scale as well as top-tier builds

Playstyle

Soulrend Soulrend clears exceptionally quickly and safely even by itself, mowing down packs of monsters with ease. Get comfortable with how much damage the damage over time component is dealing, as you can usually fire off a single cast and move on while the mobs die in your wake. Use Bane Bane to apply your curses and another damage over time component to tougher opponents. For bosses, simply apply your curses, place your Blight Blight or Wither Wither totems, and then melt the boss with Soulrend Soulrend.

Gear, Jewels, and Flasks Breakdown

Leveling

As a reminder, we have several guides to help you level up a character.

We recommend starting with Freezing Pulse Freezing Pulse, which works well with Lifesprig Lifesprig if you have one. Once you are Level 12 you are able to use Storm Brand Storm Brand, however, Shadows cannot obtain it until Act III as a purchasable gem. You will either need to mule a gem from another character, or choose another skill to level with if you are league starting (e.g. Blade Vortex Blade Vortex).

In order of priority, the Storm Brand links are:

  1. Storm Brand Storm Brand
  2. Elemental Focus Support Elemental Focus Support
  3. Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support
  4. Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support
  5. Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support
  6. Hypothermia Support Hypothermia Support

If you are using a Tabula Rasa Tabula Rasa, simply fill in the other gem sockets with whatever supports are available from the vendors until you reach Act II and Act III for the other gems.

Link Brand Recall Brand Recall to Arcane Surge Support Arcane Surge Support (Level 3) and Flame Dash Flame Dash. This is a great leveling link and should be acquired as soon as possible.

At Level 12 you can also acquire Blade Vortex Blade Vortex. Link it to Added Cold Damage Support Added Cold Damage Support, Added Lightning Damage Support Added Lightning Damage Support, and Controlled Destruction Support Controlled Destruction Support as soon as possible.

Herald of Ice Herald of Ice, Herald of Thunder Herald of Thunder, and Clarity Clarity should be used as early as possible.

Once you defeat General Gravicius you can acquire Soulrend Soulrend and start leveling with it, should you desire. Be sure to drop your Herald auras and swap in Malevolence Malevolence.

FAQ

What Annointment Should I Use for my Amulet?

  • Constitution is a great choice for survival and defense.
  • Arcane Expanse is great for offense and clear speed.
  • Whispers of Doom has the highest potential for customization but you need a clear idea of your objective and significant currency investment.

Looks good, so far. Time will tell how it fares. I’m gonna try it out as a League Starter.

Case in point; The leveling trees you’ve put out in the 9.1 Section of Leveling,
specifically the “Starting out(Freezing Pulse / Storm Brand)” and the “88 Points and Cruel Lab Completed”
is currently not working. Something seems to be wrong with it, anywho, since it can’t load the build.

Maybe it’s just me, but I figured I’d point it out if it isn’t.

Great guide, only issues I had was reaching the str requirements on a couple of the items, namely the shield. Also one thing I would like to point out is that you have Arcane Surge Support paired up with Flame Dash, but the first Ascendancy talent you take makes movement skills cost no mana, therefore making that gem null and void since it can never proc.

All fixed, alongside some updates to the build that I have found stronger since Synthesis has gone live!

There’s no visual indicator, but you should see the difference in cast speed/movement speed reflected in your character pane.

First post, and newbie question: I found this build guide too late, and am switching over to it as I didn’t like the one I found originally (thankfully easy enough to do with enough Orbs of Regret). Would this build be possible using Vixen’s Entrapment and Queen of the Forest? Thank you in advance.

Certainly! The gearing paths are pretty flexible, and Queen can be worked in to pretty much anything if you want to! You’ll want to be sure your helm is an Evasion base, of course, and you might consider Survivalist, depending on whether or not you can make use of the Resistances.

I ended up going with a Belly of the Beast as the Queen of the Forest felt too squishy. It’s a very fun build, massive crowd clearer for maps. I’m finding trouble in end game, however (example: T15 Waste Pool is chaos resistant). Seems a lot of bosses are chaos resistant, which leaves very little wind in my sails to topple them. :(

Agreed, Belly of the Beast Belly of the Beast is so cheap and effective for this build it’s hard to argue with, especially as a baseline. Having 20/20 gems will make a massive difference, and Vaal Righteous Fire Vaal Righteous Fire helps a fair bit with single target if you’re lacking. Other than that it just comes down to gear — as with many things in Path of Exile — Helm Enchants, -9% Chaos Resistance piece(s), and small improvements on Jewels and such will add exponentially better gains.

+3 Bow can be the best possible damage if you can afford the upgrade — in addition to the +3 gem levels (+1 socketed/+2 support gems) you want Non-Ailment Chaos Damage Over Time and 10% Chance to Gain Arcane Surge on Kill. Cast Speed/Mana Regeneration is also a really nice affix.

I’ll be updating the guide with some more super late-game setups for Flashback and future leagues, so stay tuned if you are interested!

Hello, after playing this guide for a while, i’m currently lvl 92. I made some changes in passive tree, in order to get enough strength and more survivability
The most important change i made is not to put points in phase acrobatics. Instead, i’ve reach Arcane swiftness + few points in node life. i clear t16 maps easily, elder too (not try uber elder ATM).
In the stuff part, i mainly focus on resistances, which have been a big problem for me, that’s why i don’t have a stygian wise but a heavy belt (help in strength requirements).
A good helmet to progress, and not expensive is the Doerdre’s Scorn, useful to put your Bane in until you have luck / currency to afford a good rare helmet.
Anyway, your guide is great ! You can found my PoB here : https://pastebin.com/dUvGJpB8

Hello, guys, can you please update the tree to 3.7 version, please? Since there’re no mana passives just after MoM, and the only passives that are near – mana+ES, i’m curious if there any way to go into es build, or should i just pick up those nodes and dont mind that there will be no ES because of acrobatics?

Tree is updated — if you want to grab those Mana + ES nodes it’s perfectly fine, although if you’re going to heavily hybridize you should invest into Ghost Dance and Escape Artist for a really survivable setup.

Hello Furty! First of all, thanks for this awesome guide, I’m doing it and I’m currenty at level 30 enjoying it a lot, but I had found a very sad issue.

As you stated, I staretd with the Passive Tree: Starting Out.

Once I finished those points, I moved to:
60 Points and First Lab Completed

In the Starting Out, to went through the Elemental way to Coldhearted Calculation, and in the ’60 Points and First Lab Completed’ tree you went through the Damage Over Time way to Fangs of the Viper….

Was this intentional? Is this an issue? Of course I cannot change that now.. .Is my character done?

Thanks again for the awesome guide, have a good day!

    Hey!

I am not Furty (maybe he’ll also respond), but I would say it is probably intentional and no, your character is certainly not done. Here’s what you do.

You link Fangs of the Viper to Coordination by taking the Entropy talent (and its two small points). This will link the two branches of the tree, allowing you to refund/unspec the Elemental Focus talent (and its two small points). You can do that in your passive tree by clicking the Refund button at the top and then choosing the talent(s) to refund. You should have a few refund points available by now from various quests, and additional refund points can always be acquired by using some Orbs of Regret (of which you may already have a few looted).

Let us know if you have any other questions!
